CHAPTER 18

Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Bashka’s Hotel, Washington, DC

Plummer’s security detail drove him to the bashka‘s hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue where they were met by the president-elect’s security entourage. The president-elect’s presence in the hotel was a total clusterfuck for the city. The avenue and street blockages had completely disrupted DC traffic, which was actually hard to screw up further. Still, the bashka had done it.

Plummer finally got to the hotel lobby from the underground garage and made his way to the elevator to take him to the president-elect’s suite. He exited the elevator and saw the same gaggle of sycophants surrounding the bashka that he had seen in New York City. If only they knew what a total loser this guy was and how close he was to heading to a federal penitentiary, Plummer thought.

The bashka greeted him warmly and invited him into a small anteroom off of the major office area. The anteroom was festooned in pictures of the bashka playing golf, at a podium, cutting a ribbon, getting on a private jet, with a buxom young woman. He obviously liked pictures of himself, Plummer thought.

“I ordered you breakfast,” the president-elect said, indicating a table with two place settings, steaming coffee, and an omelet, toast, bacon, and hash browns. “Not sure what you like. I have already eaten breakfast, but I ordered another for myself, too!”

“Smells great, but I think I’ll just have some coffee.”

“Oh shit, never drink the stuff. Makes me too edgy.”

Plummer noticed the Diet Coke on the table and figured out where the bashka‘s caffeine came from.

The bashka stood up from his chair and walked around the table to stand next to Plummer. He put his hand on Plummer’s shoulder and said, “I knew I could trust you; I saw right away you would be loyal to me. Loyalty is very important to me, you know.”

Plummer nodded. “I value loyalty, too. Here’s what I’ve done for you, sir. I have restricted all new access to the audio files and reassigned the individual who discovered your conversations in Moscow.”

“Good. I’m glad to hear.”

“I looked into erasing the audio files of these conversations and learned that’s not possible. They are already backed up. The act of trying to erase them will attract unnecessary attention that you don’t want,” Plummer said.

The bashka frowned. “Well, that’s unacceptable.” He crossed his arms over his girth. “I think after I’m sworn in, I can order for them to be erased.”

“I don’t think so, sir. I plan to stay on as the DCI, and those files are my insurance policy with you. You will be announcing shortly that I will be continuing as the director of the CIA. I know you will be criticized for this, but you have no choice. I will safeguard these files for you and me for as long as we have a positive relationship, but only as long as we do.”

“So, exactly what do you want?’

“I will be your DCI until I tell you I am not.”

“Who the hell do you think you are, telling me what I am going to do?” the bashka bellowed.
